Terms & Conditions
Please read these Terms and Conditions carefully before using Kira. By downloading or using the app, you agree to be bound by them. If you do not agree, do not use Kira.
These Terms govern your use of the Kira mobile application and any related services operated by Mikaiyo PLT.
1. Who We Are
Kira is operated by Mikaiyo PLT, a limited liability partnership registered in Malaysia. Full registered details are available upon request at kira@mikaiyo.com.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old to use Kira. By creating an account, you confirm that you are 18 or older. We do not knowingly allow minors to use Kira. If we become aware that a user is under 18, we will terminate their account and delete their data.
3. What Kira Does
Kira is a receipt-scanning bill-splitting app. It helps you:
- Scan receipts and extract itemised bill data
- Start a live, collaborative split and invite others to join by a shared link or QR code
- Let each person — including people without a Kira account — pick their own items in real time
- Calculate each person's share of a bill
- Optionally display your own e-wallet payment QR code so others can pay you directly
- Organise bill splits across groups
- Keep a private contacts list and connect with other Kira users you split with
Kira shows you who owes what. It does not process, hold, move, or facilitate any payment between users. All payments between users are made independently using your own banking apps or payment methods. Kira is not a payment processor, e-money issuer, or financial institution. The optional payment QR feature only displays an image you uploaded — Kira does not move money or access the account behind it.
When you start a live split and share its link or QR code, anyone who has that link can view the session's items, participant names, and amounts until the session expires. Only share split links with people you intend to split a bill with.
Groups are shared spaces. When you create or join a group, the other active members can see — and, for shared group expenses, edit — that group's receipts, balances, and member list, and can see your display name and profile photo. A group is removed automatically once its last member leaves. Add to a group only people you are comfortable sharing this information with.
By using Kira you may receive service and transactional notifications — for example a shared debt being marked settled, being added to a group, a payment reminder from someone you owe in a group (which may include a short note they wrote), a contact request from another Kira user, or a reminder before your subscription renews or lapses. You can turn off push notifications at any time in your device settings.
4. Your Account
4.1 Registration
You can sign up with your email address, via Google OAuth, or via Apple Sign-In. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for all activity under your account.
4.2 Account Deletion
You can delete your account at any time from within the app. You can also request deletion by emailing kira@mikaiyo.com. We will process deletion requests within 14 days.
When your account is deleted, your personal data is removed from our systems. Certain data may be retained where there is a legal or legitimate-interest basis — for example, subscription transaction records required for financial compliance, and, if you have unsettled shared balances in a group when you delete, the name you used on those specific group records, so the people you owe or who owe you can still identify and settle the balance. Everything else is deleted. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
5. Free and Premium Tiers
5.1 Free Tier
The free tier is available to all registered users at no charge. It includes a limited number of receipt scans and groups. Specific limits are shown within the app.
The free tier includes no advertisements. Kira does not serve ads to any user at any tier.
5.2 Premium Tier
Kira Premium pricing varies by country and billing plan (monthly or annual). The price applicable to your region is shown in the App Store or Google Play at the time of purchase. The Premium tier includes higher scan limits, unlimited groups, and any other features listed in the app at the time of subscription.
Features and limits for each tier may be updated from time to time. We will give you reasonable notice of any changes that materially reduce what you receive.
5.3 Scan Limits and Reset
Scan usage is tracked on a cycle that differs by tier. Free tier scans reset at 12:00 AM UTC every Monday (08:00 MYT) — unused scans do not carry over to the next week. Premium tier scans reset at the same time (UTC) on the same day of the month as your original purchase date. In months shorter than your purchase date — for example, if you purchased on the 31st and the current month has only 30 days — the reset occurs on the last day of that month. The following month snaps back to your original purchase date where possible. Unused Premium scans do not carry over to the next monthly period.
5.4 If Your Premium Ends or You Downgrade
If your Premium subscription ends or you return to the free tier, your data is retained, not deleted. Where you have more of something than the free tier allows — for example more groups than the free limit — you choose which one to keep active; the others become read-only. You and the other members can still view a read-only group and settle existing balances, but you cannot add or edit entries in it until you re-subscribe, at which point it unlocks automatically. Receipt images you uploaded while on Premium follow the free-tier retention after you downgrade (removed about one month later); the expenses themselves are kept.
6. Subscriptions and Billing
6.1 How Billing Works
Kira Premium subscriptions are purchased through the Apple App Store or Google Play. All billing, payment processing, and subscription management is handled by Apple or Google under their respective terms. Mikaiyo PLT does not collect, store, or have access to your payment card details.
6.2 Renewal
Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless cancelled. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time through your App Store or Google Play account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you retain Premium access until then. Deleting your Kira account does not cancel your subscription. If you delete your account while a subscription is active, billing will continue until you cancel through your App Store or Google Play account settings. Always cancel your subscription through the platform before or after deleting your account to avoid further charges.
As with all auto-renewable subscriptions sold through the app stores: payment is charged to your Apple App Store or Google Play account when you confirm the purchase; the subscription automatically renews for the same period at the same price unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; your account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends; and you can manage or turn off auto-renew in your store account settings at any time after purchase.
6.3 No Free Trial
Kira does not offer a free trial of the Premium tier. You can use the free tier indefinitely before deciding whether to upgrade.
6.4 No Refunds
All purchases are final. Mikaiyo PLT does not offer refunds for any subscription fees paid. If you believe you have been charged in error, contact the App Store or Google Play directly — all payment disputes are handled by the platform through which you purchased.
6.5 Price Changes
We may change the price of Kira Premium in the future. If we do, we will notify you at least 30 days in advance. If you do not agree to the new price, you can cancel your subscription before it renews at the new rate. The current price applicable to your region is always shown in the App Store or Google Play.
7. Acceptable Use
You agree to use Kira only for its intended purpose — splitting bills and managing shared expenses with people you know. You must not:
- Use Kira for any unlawful purpose
- Attempt to access another user's account or data
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or tamper with the app
- Use automated tools to access or scrape the app
- Upload receipt images that contain someone else's personal data without their knowledge
- Enter names, display names, or other content that is offensive, abusive, impersonating, or unlawful when joining or hosting a split
- Upload a payment QR code that is not your own, or that directs payment to an account you do not control
- Send payment reminders, notes, contact requests, or other messages that are offensive, abusive, threatening, or harassing, or that are sent to spam or pester another person
- Use Kira to harass, defraud, or harm any other person
Zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users. There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behaviour on Kira. Content that other people can see — including display names, group names, companion and placeholder names, and payment-reminder notes — must not be offensive, abusive, harassing, hateful, sexually explicit, defamatory, impersonating, or otherwise objectionable. By using Kira you agree to this and to these rules of conduct.
Some of this content is entered by other participants, including guests without a Kira account, and we do not pre-screen it. If you encounter content or a user that violates these rules, report it to us at kira@mikaiyo.com or leave the relevant split or group. We review every report and act on it, typically within 24 hours, by removing the content and/or suspending or banning the user responsible.
You can also limit unwanted contact: you can leave a split at any time, decline a contact request from another user, and a group admin can remove a member from a group.
We reserve the right to remove content and to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules.
8. Receipt Images and Bill Data
When you scan a receipt, the image is processed by our image-processing provider to extract item and pricing data. The extracted bill data (items, prices, totals) is stored on our servers, linked to your account, and kept until you delete it. The receipt image itself follows a retention policy that depends on your plan: on the free plan it is automatically removed about one month after upload; on Premium it is kept until you delete it, subject to a per-user storage limit shown in the app. Removing the image never deletes the expense — only the photo.
You are responsible for only scanning receipts that you are entitled to scan. Do not scan documents containing other people's personal information without their consent.
We do not use your receipt data or bill split history to train any AI model.
If you choose to upload a payment QR code, you confirm it is your own and points to an account you control. Because its purpose is to let others pay you, it is shown to other participants in your splits, including guests on the kiramyapp.com web page. You can remove it at any time in Edit Profile. Kira does not verify QR codes and is not responsible for payments sent to the wrong account.
9. Intellectual Property
Kira and all associated content — including the app, its design, name, logo, and any text or visuals within it — are owned by Mikaiyo PLT or its licensors. Nothing in these Terms gives you any ownership rights in Kira.
You retain ownership of any data you input into the app, such as names you assign to group members. You grant Mikaiyo PLT a limited licence to store and process that data solely to provide the Kira service to you.
10. Privacy
Your use of Kira is also governed by our Privacy Policy, available at kiramyapp.com and within the app. The Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights under applicable law including the Malaysian Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA), Singapore PDPA 2012, GDPR, and US CCPA.
We do not sell your data. We do not run ads. Revenue comes entirely from Premium subscriptions.
11. Disclaimers
Kira is provided as-is. We do not guarantee that the app will be available at all times, error-free, or that receipt scanning will be accurate in every case. OCR technology has limitations and extracted data should be reviewed before use.
Kira does not verify the identity of group members you add to a split. You are responsible for confirming who you share bill information with.
Kira is not a financial service. Bill split calculations are for reference only. We are not responsible for any financial disputes between users arising from the use of the app.
12. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Mikaiyo PLT will not be liable to you for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential loss or damage arising from your use of Kira — including but not limited to loss of data, financial disputes between users, or inability to access the app.
Our total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of Kira is limited to the amount you paid for your subscription in the 3 months preceding the claim, or RM 50, whichever is greater.
Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.
13. Third-Party Services
Kira integrates with third-party services for database storage and hosting, authentication, receipt image processing, subscription management, and product analytics. These services have their own terms and privacy policies. Mikaiyo PLT is not responsible for the terms or practices of these providers.
All payment transactions are processed by Apple App Store or Google Play under their own terms of service.
Apple and Google. These Terms are between you and Mikaiyo PLT only, and not with Apple Inc. or Google LLC. If you obtained Kira from the Apple App Store, you acknowledge that Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for the app, and is not responsible for the app or its content. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any); to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation regarding the app. Apple is not responsible for any claim that the app or your use of it infringes intellectual-property rights, fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, or breaches consumer-protection law, nor for handling any such claim.
Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and, upon your acceptance, have the right to enforce them against you. You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated by it as 'terrorist-supporting', and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. If you obtained Kira from Google Play, your use is also subject to the Google Play Terms of Service.
14. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this document and notify you through the app or by email if the changes are material.
Your continued use of Kira after the effective date of any update means you accept the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the updated Terms, stop using Kira and delete your account.
15. Governing Law and Disputes
15.1 Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Malaysia. Any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of Kira will be subject to the jurisdiction of the Malaysian courts, unless applicable law in your country requires otherwise.
15.2 Consumer Rights
If you are a consumer in a jurisdiction with mandatory consumer protection laws — including but not limited to the European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, or California — those laws apply to you and are not excluded by these Terms. Nothing in these Terms overrides rights you have under your local law that cannot be waived by contract.
15.3 Dispute Resolution
If you have a dispute with us, please contact us first at kira@mikaiyo.com. We will try to resolve it directly. If we cannot reach a resolution, either party may refer the matter to the courts of Malaysia.
16. Termination
You can stop using Kira and delete your account at any time.
We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these Terms, if we are required to do so by law, or if we discontinue the Kira service. If we terminate your account without cause, we will provide reasonable notice and refund any unused portion of a prepaid subscription period where required by law.
